Innovation is almost always a discursive, exploratory task: often untidy, full of missteps, blind alleys and changes of direction.
No simple, step-by-step recipe can ensure success but there are processes, which innovators can adopt to help them navigate difficult terrain and use as a guide to progress. Innovate UK’s Knowledge Transfer Network is working one such toolkit, drawing on the experience of its unique network of innovation specialists.
Frank Boyd, who has been co-ordinating the Innovation Canvas for KTN, will explain the background to the project and discuss how it can be used by business to accelerate an innovation process.
Frank Boyd, Innovation Specialist at Knowledge Transfer Network
13:45 – 14:15 Putting systems around your innovation programmes - customer case study
The adoption of Oracle Innovation Management Cloud helped Addiko Bank to improve existing quality levels, realize synergies and efficiencies across the group and to create transparency in the way they work together as a team. There is a clear need to innovate, focus on the right products and services, and have the basis to make informed investment decisions. To innovate, it is necessary to capture ideas from all sources, ranging from customers through employees, and even drive ideas from regulatory rules imposed to the bank – but even more important is to be able to translate these ideas into profitable offerings and services. Oracle Innovation Management also allows them to foster a corporate culture marked by a shared vision, strategy and values.
Ulf Köster, Solution Director for Product Innovation, Development and Commercialization Solutions at Oracle EMEA
14:15 – 14:45 Practical innovation — how to operationalise your innovation strategy
David will draw on his experiences from different sectors to look at the practical ways to ensure that innovation actually works in a corporate environment, with examples from Visa and Johnson Matthey. The discussion looks at the importance of the right resources, processes, structures, external networks and ultimately collaboration in establishing successful innovation.
David Page, former Executive Director of Transformation, Visa Europe, Founder at Business Mix
14:45 – 15:00 Coffee break
15:00 – 15:45 Product, Service and Business Model Innovation: building the appropriate Innovation Ecosystem
Innovation takes different shapes depending on the business goals pursued. Traditionally the food industry mainly pursued product innovation approaches. Faced with issues related to sustainability, market saturation, margin pressure and new consumer behaviour, food business need to go beyond product innovation by creating completely new product service platforms. Innovation ecosystems seamlessly integrating internal competencies with technology start-ups are now emerging with the potential to disrupt traditional agro-food industry. Many companies are therefore increasingly focusing on digital business model innovation.
